Barbara Schwartz (2022)
It’s been joyous to read updates on classmates. About time to share my story.
After graduating college, I spent 42 years combined federal service in the active and Army reserves as well as civil service. The Army saw fit to station me around the world; allow me to attend and support various Olympic events; get two masters degrees; and spend “time” in a combat zone in the desert. The desert and combat are not places I care to go back to but I could easily go back to Germany.
In addition to traveling around the world, I was stationed throughout the US. My favorite assignments were at West Point, Washington state and Atlanta, Georgia. I retired from the Army in 2007 as a Colonel and commander of the Army Combat Safety Unit (an oxymoron, I know). It was a rapid deploy unit and we found ourselves in exiting places such as Kosovo, Haiti, Bosnia, and Panama.
After retiring from the Amy, I continued to work for the Army and then for the Environmental Protection Agency as a civilian employee. Traveling around the US continued to be part of my job. I retired from civil service in 2017 as the Southeast Regional HR Officer for the EPA.
My wife and I moved to Fairhope, Alabama to be closer to the Ocean. It was a lovely community and close to the beach but it came with a cost. After one major hurricane that leveled our area and left our immediate community without power for ten days, and tornado warnings three times a week, we realized the grave error. We are back in Georgia. We live in Senoia (where the Walking Dead was filmed). There are no zombies these days but it is still pretty exciting to see the various movies and programs still underway in the area.
These days, I am an active volunteer at the Georgia Aquarium. I get to experience the water without the hurricanes. I am also a Master Gardner in my County. Outdoors and ocean - what could be better?
